This August, Vicars School of Massage Therapy is proud to donate $1,500 to World Central Kitchen, a global nonprofit that provides fresh, nourishing meals to communities impacted by disaster and conflict around the world, including wildfire disaster sites in Canada.
A Month of Giving, A World of Impact
For the month of August, Vicars is contributing to something bigger than ourselves—supporting frontline food relief efforts in some of the world’s hardest-hit regions. Our $1,500 donation will help World Central Kitchen (WCK) deliver urgently needed meals to people facing crisis situations across the globe.
This act of giving reflects our school’s commitment to healing—not only through massage therapy but also through acts of community and compassion.
“Usually, our giving clinic program collects the fees from every massage given on a certain date in both clinics, but because the clinics are smaller in the summer, we decided to just make a flat donation,” says Vicars School founder Maryhelen Vicars. “During the busier months, our giving clinics will bring in an average of $1500 between Calgary and Edmonton, so we wanted to do the same for World Centra Kitchen.”
About World Central Kitchen
World Central Kitchen was founded in 2010 by acclaimed chef José Andrés in the wake of the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti. Since then, WCK has grown into a trusted global organization that responds immediately to emergencies with one simple but powerful tool: a freshly cooked meal.
“World Central Kitchen started with a simple idea at home with my wife Patricia: when people are hungry, send in cooks,” says chef Andrés. “Not tomorrow, today.”
Their mission is to be first to the frontlines, nourishing communities with dignity and care when it’s needed most. WCK teams partner with local chefs and food suppliers to prepare culturally appropriate meals and distribute them efficiently and respectfully in areas affected by war, natural disasters, and humanitarian crises.
Highlights of WCK’s recent global impact:
- Ukraine: Delivering hot meals to families affected by ongoing conflict
- Gaza: Providing food support in the midst of a humanitarian emergency
- Haiti & Turkey: Emergency response following earthquakes and hurricanes
- Maui: Feeding survivors and responders during the 2023 wildfire
- Canada: Feeding evacuated families and responders this year in Saskatchewan
To date, over 450 million meals have been served by WCK in over 45 countries worldwide.
