Work and family life can be extremely demanding — even more so with serious knee pain. It drains our energy, so once-simple activities like bending on the job or lifting our kids become strenuous. When pain makes basic movement difficult, we often feel like we’re letting down our family, our colleagues, and ourselves.
With ongoing knee pain, the situation may feel out of your hands, but it isn’t. The key is to treat your pain in a way that lets you stay active. Massage therapy is easy to integrate into your daily routine, and it offers long-term symptom relief so you can stay active at work and at home.
Massage therapy for knee pain and osteoarthritis
Massage therapy has become standard practice in rehab and sports medicine for conditions like tendonitis, bursitis, and arthritis — and it may also aid recovery after surgery and significantly improve long-term, day-to-day function.
For osteoarthritis, clinical research has suggested that massage therapy may help reduce pain and stiffness and improve physical function. A 2020 paper published in Medicine outlined a systematic review and meta-analysis of the evidence for massage therapy in treating osteoarthritis.
Massage therapy may also relieve referred pain — discomfort felt in your knees that originates from another part of your body, such as an injured back, hip, leg, or foot.
What massage therapy looks like for you
Here’s what massage therapy actually looks like, from preassessment to ongoing care:
- A full physical preassessment
- Your sessions are supervised by a registered massage therapist (RMT)
- Targeted treatment for the most painful affected areas
- Deeper treatments to release trigger points, which can refer pain to other areas of your body
- A home-care plan so you can continue treatment on your own time.
At Vicars, our CMTCA-accredited education means you’re receiving the same advanced techniques used in Canada’s top medical and sports clinics, delivered by student massage therapists under the supervision of registered massage therapists (RMTs).
You might need just a weekly massage for knee pain
It is easy to integrate massage therapy into your routine. Most of our clients receive weekly treatments first. As healing occurs and pain is reduced, many clients visit us every two weeks or once a month.
After an initial session, your massage therapist may recommend weekly treatment if the massage gives you localized pain relief, improved range of motion, and relaxed muscles. After a month or so, you and your massage therapist can rework the plan based on your personal needs.
